After an extremely quiet and private relationship, big-name actors Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx shockingly broke it off with no warning whatsoever. And to make the situation even stranger, both were meticulously careful not to let a word slip about the real reason behind their high-profile split. But gradually, people who had front row seats to the sordid details have started speaking to the media – and now we finally know the real catalyst for Holmes and Foxx going their separate ways.
A Famous Romantic History
Mind you, it’s not surprising that Holmes wanted a romance out of the limelight for once. After all, before the Dawson’s Creek star embarked on a life with Foxx, she was married to none other than Tom Cruise.
And that relationship was very much not private. In fact, Cruise famously proclaimed his love for then-girlfriend Holmes in a May 2005 episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show – a moment that went down in cringe television history.
Fast-Track to Marriage
The Holmes-Cruise romance moved fast, too, and in June 2005 she converted to Scientology for the actor. Then, mere days after that revelation came to light, the media reported that Cruise had popped the question to Holmes during dinner at the Eiffel Tower – and that she had agreed to be his wife.
So, even at these early stages, the papers were going all-out to cover the couple’s dating life.
Enter Suri
There was plenty to write about, too. In October 2005, for instance, Holmes and Cruise announced that they were having a baby.
This caused a whole new whirlwind of interest, of course. The little girl was born the following April and given the name Suri. She is Holmes’ only child, though Cruise has two adopted children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.
Dedicated to Scientology
In November 2006 Holmes and Cruise married in a star-studded and luxurious ceremony. So even though both parties remained working actors, it was their personal lives that continued to provide fodder to fill column inches.
And the fact that Cruise and Holmes were Scientologists – and that Cruise is an outspoken one at that – caused major controversy in the media and beyond.
A Controversial 'Religion'
After all, some countries consider the Church of Scientology to be an outright cult. And, according to reports, Cruise had displayed cult-like behavior before marrying Holmes.
The star has apparently prevented journalists from asking about the faith, for instance, and has supposedly brought ministers onto his movie sets. Elsewhere, there are also reports of mistreatment from the church.
Friends at First
But what about Holmes and Foxx? Well, during her marriage to Cruise, Holmes at least knew Foxx as an acquaintance. Cruise and Foxx were former co-stars – having appeared alongside one another in the critically acclaimed thriller Collateral in 2004.
And the two, along with Holmes, sat together at a football game in 2006.
Loving Life
This was long before any rumors of a romance emerged, of course. At the time, in fact, it appeared as though everything was fine in the Cruise-Holmes camp.
In 2010, for example, Holmes told Marie Claire magazine, “[Cruise is] as big at home as he is on the movie screen. He’s so passionate about everything, whatever he’s doing. When he’s being a dad, he’s right there; he’s giving it his all. It’s inspiring, and it’s fun. It’s an amazing life, but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are.”
Cruise's Playboy Interview
Then in May 2012 Cruise gave an interview to Playboy magazine in which he talked about Holmes and Scientology. He said, “I have respect for what other people believe.
What I believe in my own life is that it’s a search for how I can do things better, whether it’s being a better man or a better father or finding ways for myself to improve. Individuals have to decide what is true and real for them.”
In Love with Katie
Of his wife, Cruise declared, “She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity.
She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better… I’m just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her.”
Out of Nowhere
But the apparent happiness didn’t last for much longer. The shock announcement that Holmes was divorcing Cruise came in June 2012.
It appears as if the star had kept her intentions under wraps as much as she could. According to the Los Angeles Times, Holmes had even employed a burner phone to co-ordinate matters with her legal team.
Always in the Spotlight
The actor’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe told People, “This is a personal and private matter for [Holmes] and her family. [Her] primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Yet young Suri would become the center point of speculation as to what exactly had happened in the headline-grabbing marriage..
Moving Away from Scientology
You see, a mere 11 days after Holmes filed for divorce, she was given primary custody of Suri – with Cruise only having visitation rights. Rumors then spread throughout the media that Holmes’ main motivation for the split was to stop her then-six-year-old daughter from becoming indoctrinated into Scientology.
However, the church denied this.
A Return to Spiritual Roots
Shortly afterward, reports claimed that Holmes abandoned Scientology completely and returned to her original faith of Catholicism. The revelations claimed that the star registered at the Church of St.
Francis Xavier in New York – an institution noted for its progressiveness and acceptance of LGBTQ+ people. So it looked like Holmes was striving to make big changes in her life.
An Obvious Exit
And more revelations came out about Suri the following year. In a 2013 deposition during Cruise’s legal dispute with Bauer Media Group, Cruise let some secrets slip.
He said that although “there is no need to protect [his] daughter from [his] religion,” Holmes’ fear for the young girl joining Scientology was “one of the assertions” she’d made during the couple’s divorce proceedings. And Cruise also confessed that Suri is no longer a member of the Church of Scientology.
Father/Daughter Distance
Unfortunately, though, it’s been reported that people who leave Scientology can be declared “suppressive persons” – and cut off from followers of the religion and even their families. But Cruise is still very much a Scientologist.
In this case, though, it appears as if Cruise remains a part of Suri’s life. In fact, the actor firmly denied rumors in 2013 that he had “abandoned” his child – claiming that only filming commitments kept him from seeing her.
Taking it Slow
Which brings us back to Holmes and Foxx. It wasn’t long after the Holmes-Cruise divorce, after all, that people spotted Holmes out and about with the Oscar-winning star of Ray.
Rumors soon spread about the couple, and in October 2013 the National Enquirer even published an unsubstantiated report that Holmes feared Cruise would get wind of the relationship and retaliate.
Rumors Confirmed
Yet by 2015 all anyone had seen of the Holmes-Foxx relationship were some blurry photos taken from a distance. Then, in March of that year, People magazine reported that it had spoken to a source “with knowledge of the situation.” And the source alleged that yes, there was indeed something going on between the two actors..
Keeping Things Light
People reported that the source said, “This is not some intense romance. Jamie and Katie are friends and have been for a long time.
They are two adults who are attractive and single, and so apparently conclusions will be drawn. But contrary to those conclusions, they’re not about to run off and make some serious commitment.”
Drawing Conclusions
In fact, Holmes and Foxx kept their relationship so quiet that for a while they weren’t even spotted together. Then in March 2016 someone noticed that both of the stars had started sporting rings on their fingers.
This naturally sent the rumor mill into overdrive. Foxx’s representative even had to tell People that no marriage or engagement had taken place.
There's Always Terms
Yet another curious rumor began circulating as the Holmes-Foxx relationship continued into 2017. Radar Online reported that, after their divorce, Holmes and Cruise had agreed that she couldn’t be seen courting another person until five years after their split.
The publication quoted a source as saying, “[Holmes] wanted out of the marriage so badly, she agreed to the terms.”
Evidence Finally Emerges
Incredibly, it took until January 2018 for photographs of Holmes and Foxx together at an event to emerge. The stars showed up as a couple for the Pre-Grammys Gala, and they looked perfectly happy.
And after that the pair were only occasionally seen in public on dates or leaving restaurants. Still, dark clouds were on the horizon.
Questions for Mr. Foxx
In February 2019, for instance, reports emerged that Foxx had announced his singledom while partying at an Oscars event. And according to celebrity gossipers, the star not only told the crowd that he wasn’t romantically attached, but he had also been seen dancing with several other women.
So, was it all over?
Hard to Deny
Well, despite the reports of Foxx’s claims about his splitting from Holmes, it appeared that the two were still an item. And in fact, their relationship only appeared to be getting stronger as the year went on.
Holmes was seen hanging out with Foxx’s daughter Corinne, for instance, and in May the two actors went to the Met Gala as an item.
Close, but Maintaining a Distance
And even though Foxx and Holmes didn’t walk the red carpet together, they were each other’s dates nonetheless. Later that month, after all, Corrine spoke to People magazine about the couple and their appearance at the Met Gala.
She said, “They are so great, and [Holmes] is always so chic. They were wonderful.”
Just Like That
Then suddenly, and shockingly, it was all over. In August 2019 the E! News website reported that, according to a source, the couple had broken up in May.
Perhaps their relationship hadn’t been so great at the Met Gala after all. Just a few days before the news hit, in fact, Foxx had been spotted holding hands with singer Sela Vave.
The Kindest Words
People then got speaking to an apparent insider, and the magazine reported that person as saying, “It ran its course. This industry is very tough on relationships.
[Foxx] thinks [Holmes] is an incredible human being. They had a very, very deep connection. They brought each other a lot of joy and laughter.”
But Was There More?
From there on, speculation ran rampant as to what exactly had caused the couple to break up. But two different people reportedly spoke to the website Page Six in August 2019 – and both told different stories.
The basic tale revolved around a meet-up that Holmes and Foxx were apparently supposed to have had for Memorial Day weekend in Montauk.
Conflicting Reports
One alleged source told Page Six, “[Holmes] called two hours before [Foxx] was supposed to get on a plane from Los Angeles to New York City and canceled. He was really upset.” But the other said, “[Holmes] was supposed to go to Montauk to join [Foxx], but he did something s***ty at the last minute, and that was that.
He canceled on his own and never got on the plane.”
Different Lifestyles
Yet another alleged insider spoke to Us Weekly that month, and they also claimed that Foxx had been the problem. The source reportedly said, “It has been many years of him stepping out with other women.
He’s disrespectful, and their lives were different. His partying ways don’t fit with hers as she’s focused on raising her daughter and working.”
What About the Young Woman?
The media also pointed plenty of attention at Vave – the woman Foxx had previously been seen with. However, the Baby Driver actor announced on Instagram during August that Vave was not his girlfriend and that he had no romantic interest in her.
Instead, the star said, he was just mentoring her as a young music artist.
Clarifying the Relationship
Foxx clarified on his Instagram Live that he would often let people stay at his house if he was helping them work on their careers and that Vave was no different. The actor then touched upon the photos which featured him and her holding hands.
He said, “I’m escorting her to my car, to put her in the car – my artist, who hangs out with my kids and is as young as my daughter.”
Speaking Out Against the Standard
Foxx went on to defend Vave, saying “I told her it’s going to be this way. It’s a double standard when it comes to women.
I spoke to that girl’s mom, and she put her trust in me. We want to make sure she has the opportunity to show you the talent we saw. All of the unnecessary hate for the woman, just because the guys are coming here and they’re working hard, but when a girl does it, she has an ulterior motive.”
Choice Words
Vave herself popped up in the comments of Foxx’s Instagram Live video and shut down the people who had been speculating about the relationship. She said, “For the people who care… here is the true story… for everyone else you can keep talking and calling me a w***e, slut, homewrecker, thot, gold digger, that I should die, and whatever else you want.”.
Moving On In
Elsewhere, though, a rumor came out in September that Tom Cruise wanted to try and win the newly single Holmes back. According to NW magazine and a source who supposedly spoke to the publication, “Word is that the second [Foxx] was out of the picture, [Cruise] had people make contact with [Holmes] and humbly request a meeting.”.
Just Rumors?
The alleged source apparently added that “[Cruise] wants Suri back in his life, but he’s also optimistic things could turn romantic again with [Holmes].” At the time, Cruise had reportedly not seen his daughter in a long while. The website Gossip Cop debunked the relationship rumor, though.
According to the publication’s writers, a rep for Holmes told them that nothing had happened between the actress and her ex-husband.
More Accusations from "Insiders"
But when 2020 rolled around, tabloid newspapers and gossip websites still weren’t done with the couple. In January, for instance, OK! Magazine published a report from another apparent “insider.” And this source claimed that Holmes had spent her time with Foxx taking advantage of his fame..
Utilizing Connections
According to the supposed source, Holmes leveraged the media attention on her and Foxx for her own ends. The “insider” claimed that Foxx had introduced his girlfriend to “big producers and power players.” This, the person claimed, was “a massive turn-on [for] her and something she’s taken full advantage of.”.
We May Never Know
But because of the secrecy Holmes and Foxx maintained, chances are that it will be a long while before the full story comes out – if indeed it ever does. Neither of them appears particularly the worse for wear due to their split, though.
And Holmes has said her attention is now on just being a good mom to Suri.
Always Looking Forward
In 2016, while Holmes was still dating Foxx, she told Modern Luxury magazine, “I think the most important thing in my life is giving my child the childhood I want her to have. That comes first.” And there are plenty of other Hollywood couples out there who would agree with her.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s love story is the stuff of fairytales, for instance — but even they’ve had their ups and downs.
The pair first met when they were teenagers, and after other failed romances they finally found the one in each other. Aww! But rumors have since emerged that not all is as it seems in Kunis and Kutcher’s marriage.
And this gossip led the stars to issue a very unexpected – and very public – response.
Yes, after the couple were plagued with speculation that they had split, they posted a scathing video on Instagram. And their discussions in the clip have left the internet stunned.
It was even a surprise that Kunis and Kutcher replied in the first place, given that they’re both very private people – for Hollywood stars, anyway.
But Kunis and Kutcher go way back. Remember That ’70s Show? Then you probably recall the actress playing Jackie Burkhart and her now-husband as Michael Kelso.
And the two were lucky to have met in the first place. You see, when the show first started shooting, Kunis was just 14 years old.
Yes, Kunis had been... well, let’s just say, economical with the truth when it came to her age.
Basically, the casting director on That ’70s Show had only wanted to employ actors who were 18 and over. So, Kunis simply said that she would soon be 18. And by the time the show’s bosses discovered her true age, they’d already fallen for her talent.
We wouldn’t advocate lying, but it seemed to work out for Kunis! She was chosen to play Jackie and seemingly embraced everything that the role threw at her. This included having her very first smooch on the TV show with none other than – you guessed it – Kutcher himself.
But the actor apparently didn’t realize that he was going to be the first person Kunis would kiss.
In 2001 Kunis recalled her reaction to learning that she would have to smooch Kutcher as part of the show. Speaking to Insider, she said, “I was like, ‘Oh, he’s so cute, it’s the Calvin Klein model!’ Then I was like, ‘I have to kiss him?’ I was so nervous and uncomfortable.
I had the biggest crush on him.”
But despite Kunis’ crush on Kutcher, the five-year age gap between the actors seemed too wide to bridge back then. In 2012 their That ’70s Show castmate Kurtwood Smith explained to E! News, “They played boyfriend and girlfriend, but they had completely separate lives… Mila was a kid.
That was awkward for Ashton at the beginning. He was like 19, and she was like 14 or 15.”
In fact, Kutcher would later admit that he and Kunis had more of a brother-sister relationship when they were castmates. So when Kutcher left That ’70s Show in 2005, he and Kunis basically went their separate ways.
While the two kept in contact and sometimes crossed paths at showbiz events, there was apparently nothing romantic between them.
Both Kunis and Kutcher were also in long-term relationships with other people. Kutcher married actress Demi Moore in 2005, while Kunis had been dating former child star Macaulay Culkin since 2002.
However, in 2011 the former co-stars both found themselves single once again.
And Kunis and Kutcher reunited in 2012 when they were both handing out prizes at the Golden Globes. It was there that Kunis found herself looking at the actor in a different way.
In 2018 she explained on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, “I thought it was the weirdest thing that I was checking this guy out, and it was someone that I had known forever.”
Still, Kunis must have been stoked when Kutcher invited her to his upcoming housewarming party in the Hollywood Hills. And while Kutcher had actually been planning to set his former co-star up with one of his buddies, things took a different turn.
Yep, it was here that Kunis and Kutcher finally got together!
The couple even shared their first off-screen smooch, as Kutcher recalled to Elle in 2017. “I think I was smoking cigarettes at the time, and I was still a smoker,” he said.
“And [Mila] had quit smoking and she was like, she wanted me to like shotgun a cigarette smoke so she could breathe it in, and I was like, ‘All right.’”
Kutcher continued, “I started doing this. And gradually through the night, it got closer and closer and closer… It was kind of obvious that things were happening.” To begin with, though, the pair believed that their first off-screen kiss was an error.
Kunis told Elle, “We ended up having a lot of talks about how this is a huge mistake and how he needs to go and be single, and I need to go and be single.”
Despite that little pep talk, it seems that Kunis and Kutcher simply couldn’t stay away from each other. Kunis later told Maron, “I did a movie called Friends With Benefits.
[Ashton] did a movie that was very similar called No Strings Attached. We lived our movies out. We were just like, ‘Let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun.’”
Did life imitate art? Sort of. It turns out that the pair couldn’t keep things casual after all! In April 2012 – after a few months of hooking up – they had even started living with each other.
Kutcher then filed for divorce from Moore in December 2012, and in November 2013 the split was finalized.
Now that Kutcher was officially a single man, he and Kunis wasted no time in getting engaged. That news was confirmed in February 2014 when Kunis was seen sporting a telling rock on her ring finger.
And the actress had yet another big life moment to share when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that May.
During her time on set, Kunis revealed that she and Kutcher were expecting their first child. Aww! But just like other expectant moms, she had some odd cravings – in her case, for sauerkraut and pickles.
And, apparently, Kutcher was keeping the couple’s home stocked up with all the weird foodstuffs Kunis could possibly want.
Happily, Kunis and Kutcher welcomed their first child – a girl named Wyatt Isabelle Kutcher – in October 2014. And when Kunis appeared again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2015, she opened up about Kutcher’s parenting skills.
Basically? He was “a master swaddler.” Kunis added of her fiancé, “He can swaddle anyone’s baby. Like if your baby needs to be swaddled, he will do it… Call him. He is a pro!”
The next step for Kunis and Kutcher? They tied the knot in Oak Glen, California, in July 2015. Not long after that, they welcomed their second baby, a son named Dimitri Portwood Kutcher.
And in March 2017 Kunis confirmed that she and Kutcher felt as though they were complete as a family of four.
Kunis told Entertainment Tonight, “We’re good on two right now. [With two kids], you’re running defense a little bit.
Like, one’s got one and the other’s got one, and it’s okay. I think it’s when it becomes three is when you’re like, you’re just playing offense… You’re scrambling trying to keep them all in line.” Plenty of moms with three kids will know what that feels like!
But aside from speaking out during the occasional interview, Kunis and Kutcher prefer to keep their family life out of the public eye. And the duo are especially guarded about their children’s privacy.
In 2015 they even sued the Daily Mail after the newspaper published photographs of their daughter.
And two years after the court case, Kutcher took to Twitter to remind people and the press to respect his kids’ right to confidentiality. “I continue to kindly ask, please don’t post/publish photos of our kids,” he said.
“They haven’t chosen a life in the public eye. Yes, we took them to a public place (we like sharing life with our kids). No, that doesn’t mean we are [okay] with their photos being published.”
Kunis has admitted, too, that she never actively reads stories written about her. She can’t escape them entirely, as she spots rumors about Kutcher and her on the front of magazines at the grocery store.
But for the most part, the actress seems generally capable of ignoring all the gossip.
In 2018 Kunis told Cosmopolitan, “I genuinely don’t know what’s written about me. Other than I know that I’m pregnant about once a year, and my husband and I are getting a divorce once a year.
I know this because I go down the grocery store aisle, and I see it on the cover of magazines, and I’m like, ‘Oh boy, okay!’”
But while Kunis can mostly turn a blind eye to this kind of speculation, she has admitted that the tabloid rumors do have an effect on her family. She added to Cosmopolitan, “The only thing that’s upsetting is [that] my parents and my grandparents sometimes get confused.”.
And Kunis recalled a particularly worrying story that had been written about her – one that had had a bad impact on her nearest and dearest. She told Cosmopolitan, “At one point when I was pregnant, [the tabloids] said that I had an emergency and was rushed to the hospital, and my face was on the cover.
The amount of stress that caused my family... nobody will understand.”
How does Kunis cope with these rumors? Well, in June 2019 she and Kutcher joined forces to battle the gossip written about their relationship. And in a video posted to Kutcher’s Instagram page, the couple specifically took aim at In Touch Weekly.
That’s because the magazine had claimed that the couple were calling time on their marriage.
The edition of In Touch Weekly in question was dated July 1, 2019. Ominously, it featured an image of Kunis seemingly fiddling with her ring finger.
There was also a smaller photograph of Kutcher on the cover, showing the actor looking particularly glum. And to top it all off? The headline on the front blared “It’s Over!”
In Touch Weekly’s sensational splash also stated, “She felt suffocated” – presumably referring to Kunis. And that wasn’t all.
The magazine similarly alluded to “the lie that destroyed everything” and claimed, “Mila takes the kids.” There was a reference to a “$400 million divorce shocker,” too, and a promise that “Ashton’s dark secrets” would be “exposed.”
Was this really true? Were Kunis and Kutcher in the middle of a nasty split? Well, no. And the couple weren’t going to take the speculation lying down.
So they decided to film a video of themselves mocking the In Touch Weekly cover. Then they shared the footage on social media.
In the clip, which appears to have been shot in a car, Kutcher asks Kunis, “Babe, what’s happening? What’s going on?” In response to her husband’s question, Kunis turns her phone towards the camera to reveal the In Touch Weekly cover. “It’s over between us,” she declares, while somehow managing to keep a straight face..
Faking a surprised reaction, Kutcher replies, “It’s over between us?” Kunis then nods her head and says, “Yeah.” It appears that the rumored break-up comes as news to Kutcher, as he then asks, “Oh my god, what are we going to do?” But Kunis stands by the story, telling him seriously – well, sort of – “I felt suffocated.”.
And Kutcher pretends to understand where the rumors have come from. He jokes, “You felt suffocated by me? Oh, I was just so overbearing, wasn’t I?” Kunis seemingly agrees.
To hammer the point further, she adds, “Also, I took the kids.” The deadpan expression on her face is practically Oscar-worthy by itself!
Becoming animated once more, Kutcher replies, “Oh, you took the kids? I don’t get the kids anymore?” Again reading from the cover of the magazine, Kunis explains, “But you had a very dark secret exposed.” Kutcher fakes shock and continues sarcastically, “Oh, my gosh! What was the dark secret? Must have been really dark.”.
But Kunis is unable to reveal what Kutcher’s “dark secret” happens to be. So, she says, “I don’t know.” Then, referring once more to the In Touch Weekly cover, the actress adds, “I only have this photo!” At this point in proceedings, Kunis turns to the camera and breaks her serious demeanor with a smile, confirming that she and Kutcher were joking all along..
And Kutcher delivered one final parting shot to In Touch Weekly when he uploaded the clip to Instagram. In the caption to the post, he wrote, “I guess it’s over, @intouchweekly.
Have fun selling magazines this week. Maybe next week my wife will be having twins. For the third time. But who’s counting?” Ouch!
It’s fair to say that Kunis and Kutcher’s hilarious takedown video was well received on Instagram. In a matter of weeks, the couple’s clip attracted more than five million views and a whole host of – largely supportive – comments.
Some of those messages even came from Kunis and Kutcher’s fellow celebrities.
In the comments below Kutcher’s Instagram video, actor and podcaster Dax Shepard joked that the break-up rumors had led him to believe he’d had a shot with Kunis. “DAMMIT!!! I was gonna take a run at M.K.! I want a refund!” he wrote.
Demi Lovato also approved, commenting, “This is amazing. Miss y’all.”
And Kutcher and Kunis even received some support from Kutcher’s former step-daughter Rumor Willis. The actress – whose parents are Demi Moore and Bruce Willis – posted a series of facepalm emojis alongside the hashtag, “#fakenews.” Modern Family actress Sarah Hyland – who has been described as Kunis’ doppelgänger – also joked, “I knew it.”.
So, Kunis and Kutcher’s relationship? It’s still going strong in spite of all those rumors in the press. And while having to deal with tabloids and gossip columns is just part and parcel of being famous, at least the couple have their shared sense of humor to help them laugh off any unsavory speculation..
